Course Description
Prerequisite: Minimum grade of C in EDUC 217, concurrent enrollment allowed. This course focuses on developing optimal learning experiences and environments for infants through school-age children. An emphasis on the importance of play-based, meaningful, contextual planning and assessment strategies. Student will conduct structured observations to be challenged to apply the observe, plan, and implement cycle in their placements. The course includes content supporting pre-service teachers' knowledge development in English Language Arts and Mathematics, in which students learn to design instruction integrating the other two core disciplines (social studies and science), into their planned learning experiences. Integration of the allied disciplines (integrated arts, health, physical education, social justice, and technology) is also emphasized. Topics include: Michigan Core Teaching Practices, national and state standards, project-based learning, and problem-based learning. This course meets Michigan Department of Education (MDE) Clinical Experience Requirements in the category of student contact hours for B-K and PK-3 grade bands. This course requires a minimum of 30 hours of observation/field experience. This course aligns with MDE B-K and PK-3 standards for teacher preparation and the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) Professional Standards, Competencies ECE I and II.
