SMC Board Approves Dr. Klint Pleasant’s Contract
At its regular meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 11, the Southwestern Michigan College Board of Trustees unanimously approved the contract of Dr. Klint Pleasant, incoming ninth president of SMC.

SMC Second in State in Enrollment Growth
Southwestern Michigan College finished second statewide for spring enrollment growth percentage among Michigan’s 28 community colleges. Spring marks SMC’s eighth consecutive semester for enrollment growth, Interim President Brent Brewer told the Board of Trustees at its Feb. 11 meeting.

Southwestern Michigan College Continues Presidential Search
In the search for the institution’s next president, the Board of Trustees of Southwestern Michigan College will interview an additional finalist, Dr. Klint Pleasant of Rochester Hills, Mich., on Dec. 9. After public on-campus interviews Oct. 21 and 22, the board decided at a special public meeting on Nov. 7 to consider additional prospects.

Search Progresses for Next SMC President
Southwestern Michigan College provided an update today on the search for its ninth president. Director of Human Resources Nicole Lehman noted that the position was promoted on nine different professional job boards and attracted 128 applications over a six-week period which ended on Aug. 17.

SMC Begins Fundraising Effort to Name New Wrestling Facility
Southwestern Michigan College has launched a new fundraising campaign called “Room to Grapple” with a goal of $200,000 to potentially name its new wrestling room after Hall of Fame Coach James J. Judd.

SMC Board of Trustees Adds Five Programs
At its regular meeting on Jan. 14, the Southwestern Michigan College Board of Trustees approved five new programs. They include: a one-year certificate in criminal justice; an associate degree in respiratory therapy; a certificate in dental assisting, which will have a home on the upper floor of the Dale A. Lyons Building; a credential in child development associate; and a certificate in practical nursing.

SpaceX Hires SMC Welding Graduate
Dowagiac’s Scout Hunsberger, a 2024 Southwestern Michigan College welding technology graduate, reached for the stars in her job search and is destined for Mars. Hunsberger, 21, beat out seven male contenders for a SpaceX position, TIG welder for the Starship heat shield.

SMC’s Ninth President to Start This Spring
Dr. Klint Pleasant, appointed as president on Dec. 29 by the Southwestern Michigan College Board of Trustees, is on track to assume his new responsibilities in April 2026, subject to contract approval slated for February.
