SMC Previews Nursing Program
Former Army medic Austin Evans and Buchanan’s Jaime Meahl, following her twin sisters into nursing, offered student perspectives at March 19’s Southwestern Michigan College program preview. Meahl graduates in May. Evans is halfway through the flexible, nationally-accredited program.

Bosch Underwrites SMC’s June STEM Camp
Southwestern Michigan College has been awarded a Bosch Community Fund grant for the eighth Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Summer Camp the third week of June on the Dowagiac campus. This grant underwrites a two-day STEM summer camp for 120 upper elementary students (grades 4-6).

SMC’s ‘You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown,’ Opens March 19
If you haven’t checked in lately with the “Peanuts” gang, you’re in for some surprises. Charlie Brown, at least some of the time, looks more like the little red-haired girl he’s pining for a Valentine from than the lovable loser getting undressed by line drives in comic strips. In fact, good grief! “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown’s” understudy plans to study nursing at Southwestern Michigan College, ran cross country and track for the Roadrunners and plays clarinet in the band.

SMC’s Brewer Reflects on Year as Interim President
Reflecting on his almost year at the helm of Southwestern Michigan College, Interim President Brent Brewer told the Board of Trustees March 11 that serving “has been one of the greatest honors of my professional life. It stretched me, challenged me and reminded me of why I chose to work in higher education — to make a difference in people’s lives and to be part of something bigger than myself.”

SMC Concert Features Living Composers, Low Brass
Southwestern Michigan College’s winter band concert Feb. 27 spotlighted living composers and lower brass provided by 14 musicians visiting from area high schools. Guest artist Dr. Paul Carlson of Grand Valley State University performed “American Muscle” on tuba by Inez McComas (born 1977).

SMC Hosts Five High School Bands for Clinic Day
Southwestern Michigan College’s sixth annual Clinic Day Feb. 20 featured five area high school bands and 200 musicians critiqued by Oakland University Assistant Professor of Music Dr. Pam Klena. The critiques polish March Southwestern Michigan Band and Orchestra Association (SWMBOA) festival programs.

Social Work Strides Include Technician Credential, Olivet Partnership
Southwestern Michigan College is pleased to announce that graduates of the Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Social Work program will be eligible to apply for the Social Service Technician (SST) license through the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA).

At its regular meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 11, the Southwestern Michigan College Board of Trustees unanimously approved the contract of Dr. Klint Pleasant, incoming ninth president of SMC.

SMC Second in State in Enrollment Growth
Southwestern Michigan College finished second statewide for spring enrollment growth percentage among Michigan’s 28 community colleges. Spring marks SMC’s eighth consecutive semester for enrollment growth, Interim President Brent Brewer told the Board of Trustees at its Feb. 11 meeting.
